Charles Butler, my DAR ancestor, wrote that he was from Craven County. But he lived in Sampson County, or did he.....
“The Butlers settled on Little Cohera and Great
Cohera Creeks in [‘what is now,’ plr] Sampson County in the 1750s.
Charles
Butler bought land on Little Cohera east of what is now Roseboro
in
1769. Robert Butler lived
west
of Great Cohera.

For now, suffice to say that even the first land bought by Charles' father, Robert Butler, may too have been located in what eventually became Sampson County even IF it was originally Albemarle County (because all of NC was Albemarle), or even Chowan or Bertie, as the counties subsequently were named!
